Author counts blessings with book for children
NORWALK -- Norwalk author Allia Zobel Nolan says that she counts her blessings every day, and in her latest religion-based children's book, "Thank You God-from Kids Around the World" she reminds young children to do the same.
"I wanted to write a book about kids thanking God for all the blessings they have, because I wanted them to realize where all the good stuff comes from," she says. "When someone gives you such wonderful gifts, it's always nice to say thank you."
"Thank You God" is geared toward children ages 3 to 6 and focuses on children from around the globe being thankful for things that are specific to their countries and cultures. Illustrated by Miki Sakamoto, the book includes images of children in the U.S.and the Statue of Liberty, Mexican children with piñatas, Russian children playing with babushka dolls, Irish children thankful for castles and shamrocks, and Japanese children thankful for their parents and painted dragon kites.
"Children are seeing people from different cultures at an early age," says Nolan. " This book provides an opportunity for parents to talk their children about our differences and our similarities."
Each page contains a flap that, when lifted, reveals a surprise image from each country.
"Children love the flaps," says Nolan. "They open them and see what's behind each door, so to speak."
"It's the interactive nature of this book that makes it especially interesting to young children. While the book business is changing, in my opinion, children's books will never go out of style. You can't cuddle up with a Kindle."
Nolan, who has had no formal writing training, has authored over 160 books, due to what she calls her persistence and love of writing. Her jumping-off point as a writer came in the form of a freelance opinion piece that was published in The New York Times.
"After that was published, I was bitten," she says.
With the published piece in hand, her writing career took off.
"That was my portfolio at the time, that one article," says Nolan.
The article opened doors and landed her freelance writing jobs with The Hartford Courant and Stamford Advocate. She learned the book business while working in the corporate office of Waldenbooks.
Her first published book, "The Joy of Being Single" had its genesis as a series of one-liners published in the Herald Tribune. It was sent off to wire services, and Peter Workman, principal of Workman Publishing saw it and contacted Nolan.
"He told me he thought it would be a great subject for a book," says Nolan.
After writing several humor books for adults, she branched out to writing books for cat lovers. Her love of cats was reflected in her books, "101 Reasons Why a Cat is Better Than a Man," and "Purr More, Hiss Less: Heavenly Lessons I Learned from My Cat."
Nolan then landed a job as a children's editor for Reader's Digest Books. She began to write books for their Children's Bible Stories Division, with titles such as "When God Turns in the Day," and "God Loves Us Little One."
She had found her niche and now writes books about what she calls her two passions: God and cats.
Nolan was the winner of the Connecticut Press Club Literary Award for "Bunnies Are for Kissing."
She is working on a sequel to "Thank You God." It's called "Hugs & Kiss, GOD from Kids Around the World."
"Thank You God" is available at Barnes and Noble, Amazon. Com and Christianbook.com.
